THE CHEMOURS COMPANY DISCHARGES WASTE INTO THE CAPE FEAR RIVER, POLLUTING THE WATER SUPPLY DOWNSTREAM. (JEREMY LANGE)

DEMOCRACY GREEN'S OFFICIAL COMMENT TO THE NC DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY FOR THE PROPOSED CHEMOURS CORRECTIVE ACTION PLAN.

Dear Ms. Holman:

Please consider this the comment by our group, Democracy Green, on the proposed Chemours Corrective Action Plan.

Chemours has been dumping toxic GenX compounds into the Cape Fear River, the main water source for Wilmington, NC, for over a decade. Corporate polluters such as Chemours, a direct spin-off of DuPont, have been the source of public and environmental harm in our most vulnerable communities in North Carolina. As a collective, we must make specific demands to protect the livelihood of residents and the cleanliness of the natural resources we depend upon.
We lift the following:

  1. Public meetings should be set in place to make amends for previously cancelled meetings

  2. Protections should be granted for both surface and groundwater

  3. Chemours should be held accountable for chemical groundwater clean-up standards at PQL, which is already demanded by law.

  4. Toxicological studies should be completed to detect PFAS chemicals in human blood

  5. Relieve the burden of determining if PFAS chemicals are safe to consume from North Carolina residents

  6. Chemours should be financially responsible for all necessary expert research and review

  7. Chemours should also be held accountable for the harm done to our wildlife and conduct complete ecotoxicology reports for PFAS emitted into Cape Fear River, and develop an action plan for rectifying the effects

  8. Chemours should be financially responsible for the repopulation of fish and additional wildlife in the Cape Fear River basin until it is scientifically determined that PFAS had no impact on reproduction

We stand in support of the comments in detail lifted by Clean Cape Fear. We encourage the NC Department of Environmental Quality to consider deeply the recommendations detailed in the document and the directives listed above.

“North Carolina is the third highest state for PFAS exposure,” said Jamie DeWitt, Ph. ... EPA detected PFAS in the drinking water of 20 public water systems, across 11 counties in North Carolina. These man-made chemicals are found in consumer products as varied as nonstick cookware, pizza boxes, and stain repellents

 Sounding the Alarm on PFAS

Democracy Green co-planned and co-convened a tour with Celebrity Mark Ruffalo that included two days of screen filmings, meetings with legislators and a tour of PFAS impacted hot spots. In collaboration with Participant media, Center for Environmental Health, Clean Cape Fear, NC Conservation Network and various other organizations and advocates.

In addition to co-planning the event, Democracy Green coordinated the busing of community members to Wilmington, NC and Raleigh, NC to attend the tour, speak during various pressers to tell their story and meet privately with Mark Ruffalo.
